Sainsbury’s Revamps Leadership with New Retail and Tech Chiefs

Sainsbury’s has announced a significant shake-up of its leadership team, appointing new heads for its retail and technology divisions as part of its ongoing ‘Next Level’ strategy. The changes aim to bolster key areas of the business, including customer experience, data integration, and the transformation of its Argos brand.

New Leadership Appointments

Tracey Clements has joined Sainsbury’s operating board as the newly created Chief Retail, Logistics and Supply Officer. This consolidated role brings together the supermarket’s retail, digital, customer experience, supply, and logistics capabilities. Clements, formerly with BP, brings extensive experience from her previous roles at Tesco and Boots.

Mark Given, previously Chief Marketing, Data and Sustainability Officer, will now serve as Chief Technology, Marketing and Data Officer. This expanded role will focus on accelerating the integration of data and insights with its Nectar 360 and marketing efforts, including the rollout of AI within its loyalty scheme.

Rob Barnes, former CIO of Asda, is set to join Sainsbury’s in October as the new Chief Technology Officer, reporting to Mark Given. Barnes was instrumental in Asda’s ‘Project Future’ IT separation from Walmart.

Rhian Bartlett, currently Chief Commercial Officer, will take on an expanded role as Chief Commercial and Sustainability Officer, aiming to place sustainability at the heart of commercial decision-making.

Restructuring at Argos

In addition to these appointments, Sainsbury’s is restructuring the retail and transformation teams at Argos. These teams will now report directly to Graham Biggart, Managing Director for Argos and Chief Strategy Officer. This move is intended to sharpen the focus on Argos’s transformation plan and accelerate its growth.

Strategic Vision

Sainsbury’s CEO Simon Roberts expressed his enthusiasm for the new appointments, stating, "Her breadth of experience, energy and customer-first mindset make her an outstanding addition to our leadership team and I’m confident she will play a pivotal role in accelerating our plan and shaping the next chapter of our Sainsbury’s business." He further emphasised that these changes are critical for delivering the company’s ‘Next Level’ strategy, aiming to enable faster operations, better customer service, and long-term growth across the group.
